Microalgal and Terrestrial Transport Biofuels to Displace Fossil Fuels
نویسنده
چکیده
Terrestrial transport biofuels differ in their ability to replace fossil fuels. When both the conversion of solar energy into biomass and the life cycle inputs of fossil fuels are considered, ethanol from sugarcane and biodiesel from palm oil do relatively well, if compared with ethanol from corn, sugar beet or wheat and biodiesel from rapeseed. When terrestrial biofuels are to replace mineral oil-derived transport fuels, large areas of good agricultural land are needed: about 5x10 ha in the case of biofuels from sugarcane or oil palm, and at least 1.8-3.6x10 ha in the case of ethanol from wheat, corn or sugar beet, as produced in industrialized countries. Biofuels from microalgae which are commercially produced with current technologies do not appear to outperform terrestrial plants such as sugarcane in their ability to displace fossil fuels. Whether they will able to do so on a commercial scale in the future, is uncertain.

Biodiesel from microalgae beats bioethanol.
Renewable biofuels are needed to displace petroleum-derived transport fuels, which contribute to global warming and are of limited availability. Biodiesel and bioethanol are the two potential renewable fuels that have attracted the most attention. As demonstrated here, biodiesel and bioethanol produced from agricultural crops using existing methods cannot sustainably replace fossil-based transp...

Global warming is a deteriorating international issue linked to the continuous rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) due to an increase in worldwide energy consumption with the burning of fossil fuels[1]. A new alternative and sustainable fuel source must be found to replace fossil fuel uses, and to prevent global energy crisis. Microalgae, a promising biofuel feedstock, with a much greater ...

The growing concern surrounding the continued use of fossil fuels and rapid depletion of fossil fuel reserves, global climate change, rising crude oil price and environmental degradation have forced scientific community and researchers to find out alternative energy sources. The potential of microalgae as a source of renewable energy has received considerable interest. However, the overall curr...

Life-cycle studies of the currently dominant transport biofuels (bioethanol made from starch or sugar and biodiesel made from vegetable oil) show that solar energy conversion efficiency is relatively poor if compared with solar cells and that such biofuels tend to do worse than conventional fossil transport fuels as to the emission of eutrophying and acidifying substances. Lifecycle studies of ...
متن کاملElevated acetyl‐CoA by amino acid recycling fuels microalgal neutral lipid accumulation in exponential growth phase for biofuel production
Microalgal neutral lipids [mainly in the form of triacylglycerols (TAGs)], feasible substrates for biofuel, are typically accumulated during the stationary growth phase. To make microalgal biofuels economically competitive with fossil fuels, generating strains that trigger TAG accumulation from the exponential growth phase is a promising biological approach. The regulatory mechanisms to trigger...
